Howe (Samuel Gridley) is born in Boston.
October 10, 1801
The son of Joseph and Martha (Gridley) Howe, Samuel Gridley Howe graduates from Brown University and Harvard Medical School, serves as a surgeon in the Greek war for independence, then becomes involved in freedom movements in Prussia and Poland. He returns to Boston, serves as the first director of the Perkins School for the Blind (1832-45), marries Julia Ward in 1843,* and subsequently lives near today’s 3 Story Street. Howe subsequently becomes involved in the abolition and other social reform efforts and serves as the chairman of the Massachusetts State Board of Charities (1865-1874). He dies in Boston on January 9, 1876.
